A personal choice
The latest trends in real estate communication are related to a topic strongly influenced by the money we have in pocket or, more elegantly put, our access to financing. For a number of years, I have heard more and more about the residential rental market that Romanians refuse to embrace as gladly as they are expected to do. Who would like them to do that? And why?
I have heard rational arguments about the affordability of a certain purchase, financial smartness and the acquisition of a property that answers your needs, not some wish-list dream. I have also heard subjective points of view, comparing real estate clients to kids in a candy store after 50 years of oppression. Therefore, I believe it is high time we approached real estate rental and acquisition from a more tangible angle.
Whether you are a real estate professional or a consumer, it is no small thing to close a profitable and honorable deal. Whether you rent or buy, this is definitely not the place to start debating mentalities and claiming that the nation has a problem, as people would rather be owners than tenants. Everyone is free to make a choice.
Nowadays clients are better informed and able not only to identify a quality property, but mature enough to understand what they can afford. The global financial tensions have changed both realtor market and clients, teaching a hard lessons to all those who bit more than they could chew. Surely, there are times in life when the acquisition of a property is the right choice. If you are in your 20s or early 30s and not lucky enough to have inherited a large sum of money or find an excellent paid job, renting is the reasonable decision. You may not even afford a mortgage loan. However, in the long run, it is always better to invest in your future and end up owning the property, than just paying for the right to use it.
It might seem an emotional decision, caused by 50 years of injustice, but property acquisition is the answer to one of the most basic needs: securing a shelter. Food and shelter are the most basic needs, even for us humans. You might not have the money to go on expensive holidays or buy the latest designer items, but a safe roof over your head can already make your life better! In addition, such a desire is a motivational element. If you have no dreams, no aspirations, no desires, then you won’t be interested in development, in growth and achievement. It is normal to hope for more and better. This should make everyone more ambitious and perseverant.
Examples of nations such as Germany, where some 60 per cent of the residents prefer to rent rather than buy, at a first glance make you wonder why Romanians can’t adjust to such a way of living. It is known that our openness to switching jobs in different cities is lower in comparison to other people. But we can adjust to any given situation. A good option seems to be renting out our own property to offset some of the expenses, while we move to a different city or even to a foreign country.
