While admitting that the crisis has proved difficult to manage for both Romania and Hungary, Oszkar Fuzes, the Hungarian Ambassador to Bucharest, feels a great sense of satisfaction for his input in creating a stronger level of cooperation and trust between the two countries. In an exclusive interview with Business Arena Magazine, the Ambassador expressed his confidence in Romania's future economic prospects, even though its development might be slowed down by the financial crisis affecting all Europe.
“Romania today is a more mature, modern, European country. Even if it still maintains a certain inferiority complex, it will continue to progress. Romanians are people of great talent and patience, which are strong attributes in times of financial instability and economic trouble,“ said the Hungarian Ambassador.
In the early days of the crisis, he focused on the positive aspects, expecting a stronger cohesion between Romania and Hungary in times of financial instability. Nowadays, he is more reserved, as the effects of the crisis have proved difficult to handle by two countries and their economies. “The continent is in deep crisis, so the European social model has been disrupted. This crisis will definitely teach us a new way of living – always thinking before acting towards consumption, and learning that before spending money, we must earn it first,” he added. Meanwhile, Hungary itself has had to take measures to counter the crisis. “We have decided to lower the overall public debt, which is much higher than in Romania, reaching 78 per cent of the GDP, while it hovers around 40 per cent in Romania.”
When market conditions tend to become harsher, a stronger cooperation between the two neighboring countries could ease the transition period. “When I presented my credentials to President Basescu my goal was to establish an alliance based on real trust. And I can firmly say that I am satisfied that Romania and Hungary have developed an alliance based on mutual confidence, especially in areas such as European affairs and regional problems. We have become allies, having permanent collaboration and consultations, as well as exchanging ideas on different matters. One of the main pillars of this alliance is our collaboration in accessing EU funds,” explained the Ambassador.
