Having embarked on a challenge to lead Garanti Bank Romania to new highs in a competitive market and a difficult economic environment, General Manager Ufuk Tandogan relies on the bank's quality, innovative products and services in his bid. In an exclusive interview with Business Arena, Ufuk Tandogan outlined the main 2013 strategies and potential threats in the market, and emphasized that sectors such as agri-business, energy, tourism, services and infrastructure provided good opportunities for business in the near future.
On which market segments is Garanti Bank’s growth strategy focusing on in 2013?
We will continue our already established prudent approach of the market, with a special focus on improving the quality of our products. In particular, this year we will focus on all market segments – retail, SME and corporate. We will continue doing this in a prudent and wise manner though, considering the economic challenges.

What is your view on the level of competition in the Romanian banking and what services and products could give your bank an edge against competition?
With the market being so highly volatile, the banks have to be competitive in order to reach customers. Everybody will be struggling this year to find the right places to meet the customers and to offer them the most suitable products and services.
As for us, we will continue to play our best card, which is innovation. Garanti Bank is already one step ahead in the market, mainly due to the innovative services we offer and for the high quality customer service. We have developed a wide product portfolio that relies heavily on customized products and services, a winning formula already tested in Turkey and which proves to be successful in Romania also.
In terms of products that could give our bank an edge against competition, we will continue to focus on the promotion and sale of Bonus Card, our flagship product.
