Architectural design is all about understanding people and grasping the big picture

A deep understanding of each country's specificities and visionary ambition seem to be the secret recipe for success as one of the leading architects at international level. And those very elements have transformed the young Yael Argaman into Owner, Managing Director and leading Architect of Casiopea Group.
With over 15 years experience in architecture and design, specializing in shopping centers and residential complexes, and more than 13 years experience in management, Israel-born Yael has been involved in the planning of medium and large scale projects over the whole CEE region, including Hungary, Romania, Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Macedonia, Slovenia and Italy.

How did you decide to build a career in architectural design?
I think that somehow I was born as an architect because this is what I remember doing all my life: building and designing. I started architecture studies in high school. I continued at the university and it was quite natural that I would soon become impatient to open my own studio!  Yet, I needed prior practice, so I joined a very famous design firm during my studies. Hence, when I graduated, I had already been a practitioner in my field for five or six years.

How did you start your own business?
My firm, named Argaman Architects LTD, was established in 1998. It was an architectural design firm in Israel and the first major project that we got was to plan an extension – a new wing – for the Ministry of Justice in Jerusalem. It was a huge achievement for our young firm, following which we received more invitations to design public buildings, such as schools, sport halls, municipal buildings, synagogues, etc.! By the second birthday of our firm, we had already employed a team of over 10 architects.
We also took some unusual steps and initiated projects – in a way acting like developers. On several occasions we approached local authorities, land owners and/or private investors with ideas for projects in specific locations, where we believed such projects would be required. We would go to such meetings already equipped with architectural presentations, to show how we imagined those projects. This way we managed to win some major contracts for design.
In 2001 we decided to expand to Europe and we founded Casiopea Group, with branches in Poland and the Czech Republic and the headquarters in Budapest. The company grew fast and after three years we were already employing a team of around 35 architects.
Meanwhile we have expanded our business and in addition to the above mentioned countries, we also operate in Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Serbia, Slovenia, etc.
